Defending wild salmon from fish farms

Defending wild salmon from fish farms

Safe Passage

About Safe Passage

Wild salmon are the lifeblood of this province. However, parasites, bacteria and viruses from factory fish farms threaten B.C.’s wild salmon and the health of our coastal waters. In December 2019, the federal government promised to transition all open-net salmon farms out of B.C. by 2025.

In June 2022, the Fisheries Minister made the decision not to renew fish farm licenses in the Discovery Islands, a bottleneck for out-migrating wild salmon. A final decision was made in February 2023 to not allow fish farms to return to the area.

The remaining factory farms throughout B.C. were given two-year licences while the government continues to consult on the 2025 transition plan. In the meantime, Broughton First Nations and shíshálh First Nation have taken action to remove another 15 fish farms from their territories. While we have seen progress toward removing factory fish farms, the Feds need to finish the job—no half measures will be accepted. Can you help keep them accountable by making sure the feds know that any type of salmon farm operating in our coastal waters is a detriment to wild salmon?
